OUR STAFF
We have three members of staff. They come from further down the coast as do all the other staff on the plots.
Wilfred is the cook. He works tirelessly to provide excellent meals without having easy access to shops. (A boat goes down to Lamu Town every couple of days for supplies). He is also a very good teacher and will show you how to make some of his specialities like samosas if you ask him.
Frederick is the house steward and is charge of cleaning the bandas and keeping the camp tidy. He will change the beds every three days and clean your banda thoroughly every day.
Charo is responsible for serving the meals and bringing tea, coffee and ice and replenishing the cool box with drinks.
They work throughout the year for us, looking after our plot while we are not there.
Please see the information about tipping in the money section. Tips on the island are an important part of income, custom and culture.
You will see other people working at the house. They mostly come from Kizingo and do the maintenance and building work. You do not need to tip them.
ASKARIS
On the first day you arrive a troop of askaris (guards) will come and welcome you. They patrol the beach at night and keep watch for any strangers. They will escort you along the beach when itβs dark. They have big torches (which they use constantly- sometimes shining them into the bandas in the middle of the night by mistake) and sticks (which they do not use.)
On the last day of your visit, they will come and wish you farewell.
They need tipping β 1,000ksh per askari but give this to Wilfred to distribute.
